Fats, oils and grease (FOG)
Did you know that fats, oils and grease that are poured down the drain or garbage disposal contribute to the cost of maintaining sanitary sewer pipes, the cost of treating wastewater at our sewage treatment plants, the cost of electricity and potentially to the pollution of our lakes and streams? If you home is serviced by an inidividual on-site septic system FOG in your pipes could also lead to sewage back-ups.
Efforts are underway to control how waste FOGs are disposed of in Duluth. Check out this slide show. There is also some good information from the Environmental Services Department of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, Ireland. Click on the "Clearing the FOG" button.

Do pour waste oils and grease into a container and toss into the trash. Don't pour it down the drain. |
